Driving excellence in mental health innovation

About us

Maudsley Innovation is dedicated to transforming the future of mental health care through collaboration, research and technology. We bring together the expertise of clinicians, academics, digital specialists and industry partners to create solutions that deliver measurable improvements in mental health outcomes. Our work focuses on translating innovative ideas into practical tools, treatments and systems that support patients, carers and professionals.

Through our Living Labs, MI provides an environment where new technologies and approaches can be safely tested within real NHS settings. These unique spaces allow start ups, researchers and innovators to co design, pilot and evaluate solutions alongside clinicians and people with lived experience. This approach ensures that every innovation is shaped by real world needs, generating evidence that supports its adoption across wider health and care systems.

MI also plays a key role in connecting mental health innovation with policy, funding and implementation. We guide partners through the complex NHS landscape, helping them navigate regulation, procurement and integration while maintaining clinical safety and effectiveness. By embedding innovation within care pathways, we help ensure that promising ideas become sustainable improvements that benefit both individuals and communities.

As part of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM), MI is uniquely positioned at the intersection of clinical excellence, academic research and digital innovation. We work closely with King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN) and the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre to translate cutting edge research into practice.

About South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust is one of the worlds most established mental health providers, with origins dating to 1247 when the Priory of St Mary of Bethlehem was founded in the City of London. Today we provide the widest range of NHS mental health services in the United Kingdom, serving around 1.3 million people across Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Croydon, and delivering national and specialist services. Each year we care for more than 5,000 inpatients and support over 40,000 people in the community. Our strength is the combination of outstanding care and treatment, science and research, and staff training, so that service users receive the highest standards of care while new and better treatments are developed and the latest knowledge is shared across our workforce. We aim to improve health and wellbeing locally, nationally and globally.

Part of King’s College London, the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience is a leading European centre for mental health and neuroscience research and the largest in the United Kingdom. Through world class research, education and training, IoPPN staff and students advance understanding, prevention and treatment of mental illness and other conditions that affect the brain. In close partnership with South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and King’s Health Partners, we translate evidence into better care and share knowledge with communities worldwide.
